All About Downtown Reno

Situated around 20 miles from the California State line is Reno, the original Nevada town nicknamed Sin City. Reno is a picturesque city located in the Washoe Valley of northwestern Nevada and is surrounded by the Sierra Nevada Mountains.

Affectionately known as "The Biggest Little City In The World," Reno still has a charm not unlike a much smaller town yet with all the conveniences of a large city. Reno was founded in 1868 by Myron Lake who established the town site and named it Reno after Civil War General Jesse Reno. Originally called Lake's Crossing, Lake deeded land to the Central Pacific Railroad in exchange for their promise to build a train depot on the land. He also sold additional land to businessmen and individuals, establishing the beginnings of the city we see today. Lake's home, the Lake Mansion, is the oldest surviving building in Reno and is now a museum located on the south side of town.

Today, bright lights permeate nearly everything in the downtown casino area at night and the action never stops. Though Reno doesn't have quite the glitz of Las Vegas, it does have its own less ostentatious "Strip" situated in the downtown area and running south on Virginia Street, the main north-south drag.

Getting around is easy and excellent public transportation runs around the clock in the downtown area and on the main thoroughfares so renting a car is not really necessary. Taxis are also readily available everywhere.

While Reno is most commonly thought of as a gambling town there is much more to do in Reno than just gamble! For a break from gaming, head to the scenic Riverwalk, a lovely boutique shopping area located along the banks of the Truckee River in downtown Reno.

Within an hour or less you can enjoy world class skiing, lakes, rivers and many types of outdoor activities. Lake Tahoe is just a few miles away and offers some of the most beautiful scenery anywhere.
