The Reno-Tahoe International Airport is a gateway to heavenly skiing!
Celebrating 80 years of service in 2008, the Reno-Tahoe International Airport is ranked as the 61st busiest airport in the United States, second only in Nevada to McCarran International Airport. Reno-Tahoe International Airport has always served as a gateway to gambling and skiing resorts in the area, but it really came into its own with the construction of the first passenger terminal in 1960 for the Winter Olympics which were held in Squaw Valley, California that year.
Today the terminal serves eleven airlines with 23 gates leading to 140 daily flights around the western United States, from Los Angeles to Dallas/Fort Worth and Chicago-O'Hare. Recent remodeling has upgraded the food court and the TSA screening area, making ingress and egress intuitive and comfortable for passengers who are headed for outdoor vacations around Lake Tahoe, the largest alpine lake in North America.
Lake Tahoe is one of the major tourist attractions in the western United States. Surrounded by steep mountain slopes, Lake Tahoe attracts skiers in the winter and water sport enthusiasts in the summer. Downhill skiing actually supports the local economy for most of the year. Major ski resorts include Heavenly Valley and Incline Village in Nevada. California is best known for ski resorts at Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows. Snow mobile riding, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing are also popular. In addition to boating, summer activities include jet skiing, parasailing, kayaking, hiking and bicycling. Scuba diving is also a popular sport, but it is safe only for advanced divers, due to the increased risk of decompression sickness at such a high altitude.
The Reno-Tahoe area is also served by an Amtrak station in Truckee, California. The lake can be reached by car from Sacramento or from Reno, in clear conditions, in less than two hours. While many die-hard skiers love to drive in the snow with chains on their tires, the most convenient way to reach the area is by flying into the Reno-Tahoe International Airport and renting a car for the weekend.
