Reno Stead Airport is a 5,000 acre general aviation airport, serving as a reliever airport for Reno-Tahoe International Airport. Reno Stead is home to the Aviation Classics, the Bureau of Land Management, Nevada Kart Club and the Reno Air Racing Association. Located approximately 15 miles north of Reno, Reno Stead Airport is working to develop itself as a major economic hub.

About The Reno Stead Airport

Reno Stead Airport accepts traffic overflow from Reno/Tahoe International Airport. Located in North Valleys, approximately 15 miles from Reno, the airport does not have regularly scheduled flight service. Originally used for military purposes, ownership was given to the city of Reno in 1966.

The Reno Army Airport was built in 1942 by the Army Air Corps. This structure would eventually become the Reno Stead Airport. In 1951, Reno Army Airport was renamed Stead Army Airbase in honor of Croston Stead, a service member who died during training exercises. Military servicemen and astronauts trained at Stead Airbase from 1954 to 1964. Faced with closure in 1963, the decision was made to transfer ownership to Reno.

Approximately 200 aircraft are stationed at Reno Stead Airport, including fire fighting planes owned by the Bureau of Land Management. In 2006 the Federal Aviation Community awarded Reno Stead on safety features, tenant interaction and community projects. Improvements include extended runways and road reconstructions.

The airport hosts a number of events that are open to members of the general public. Reno Air Races, also known as the National Championship Races, have been a fixture since 1964. High performance aircraft compete against one another on closed courses. The Sports Car Club of America has gatherings throughout the year. Members of the New Mexico Trucking Association hold annual races at the Reno Stead Airport.

Flight schools located on the grounds of Reno Stead provide instruction to more adventurous types. Aviation Classics provides aircraft repair, recovery and maintenance. The Army National Guard also has offices on the premises.

According to Reno Stead officials, the airport sees a majority of its traffic during the month of September. This is the only time of year that the area is manned by traffic control personnel. There are no onsite vendors for food or drink purchases.

Reno Stead Airport is one of the few facilities that has not received a location identifier from the International Air Transport Association.
