More On The Marina
Located on the eastern slopes of the Sierra Mountains, the Sparks Marina Park is a popular daytrip for tourists visiting Reno, Nevada. Covering an area of around 80 acres, the park features a man-made lake. The Marina Lake contains about one billion gallons of water and is fed with filtered water from an underground aquifer. During the summer months, the lake is open to swimming in designated areas, with lifeguards on duty every afternoon. Tree-lined walking paths and sandy beaches surround the lake.
Fishing is another popular activity at the Marina at sunrise and sunset. Black bass may be part of three game fish catch limit. Boats with electric or no motors are permitted on the lake. Scuba diving is also permitted to those who can prove scuba diving certification. Park facilities include volleyball courts, playgrounds, picnic areas and showers. There is also a dog park. A concession stands offers refreshments during the summer. Rangers monitor the park from 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. daily.
The city of Sparks, reported as the fastest growing city in Nevada, often serves as a base for those visiting Reno and Lake Tahoe, about 30 miles to the southwest. The Sparks area was originally inhabited by the Washoe people. The Southern Pacific Railroad expanded into the area in 1904 and the area became settled. The city was named after the governor of the time, John Sparks. City attractions include a high-rise casino and hotel, John Ascuaga’s Nugget.
The Sparks Heritage Museum, founded in 1985, preserves the area’s history with “yester-year” displays that depict the life of early settlers, with a focus on historical artifacts from the date that the town became a chartered city. The museum is free. Donations are accepted.
The larger Reno-Tahoe area features many attractions that draw visitors the year round. The area includes many golf resorts and 18 ski resorts. Gambling is another popular activity in Nevada, and the area features a number of casinos. Lake Tahoe, the largest alpine lake in North America, is about 22 miles long and 12 miles wide, with 72 miles of scenic shoreline. Flights are available into the area through the Reno Tahoe International Airport.
